003 | TNW Podcast - Jane Elliot
Monday Nov 14, 2022
Monday Nov 14, 2022
Jane Elliott is a citizen of The United States of America. She is a lecturer and a diversity educator. Her focus is leading people out of the ignorance of education. As a schoolteacher, she became known for her "Blue eyes/Brown eyes" exercise. She first conducted her famous exercise for her class on April 5, 1968, the day after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. When her local newspaper published compositions that the children had written about the experience, the reactions (both positive and negative) formed the basis for her career as a public speaker against discrimination. Elliott's classroom exercise was filmed the third time she held it with her third-graders in 1970, becoming the documentary The Eye of the Storm. This in turn inspired a retrospective that reunited the 1970 class members with their teacher fifteen years later in "A Class Divided", an episode of the PBS series Frontline. After leaving her school, Elliott became a full-time diversity educator. She still holds the exercise and gives lectures about its effects all over the U.S. as well as in several locations overseas. She has conducted the exercise with college students, as seen in the 2001 documentary The Angry Eye.

029 | TNW Podcast (formerly MAKER AMSTERDAM Podcast) - Afaina de Jong
Monday Dec 20, 2021
Monday Dec 20, 2021
Afaina de Jong is a Surinamese-Dutch architect based in Amsterdam.
She possesses a unique design aesthetic that fuses various international design practices with an underpinning of feminine African design and cultural principles. Afaina bases her distinctive approach to modern and contemporary architecture on the perspective that good design is for everyone and should be accessible to everyone. Working from her down-to-earth design studio, AFARAI, in Amsterdam's historic Jordaan neighborhood, Afaina most recently designed the groundbreaking "Slavery" exhibit for the principal Dutch National museum, The Rijksmuseum. Four years in the making, this exhibit was the first of its kind in the Netherlands. While heading her design studio, Afaina has been designated as Head of Masters in Contextual Design at Design Academy Eindhoven. We enjoyed sitting down with Afaina in her Amsterdam studio, and we invite you to listen in on our conversation.
AFARAI is an Amsterdam-based architectural agency specializing in spatial design and strategy, led by architect Afaina de Jong. The studio aims to cross the boundaries of the traditional architecture practice by dealing with the existing city with an intersectional and interdisciplinary approach, integrating theory and research with design. As a studio, AFARAI considers itself a feminist practice that encourages change on social and spatial issues and accommodates differences.
